A 40th High School Reunion in St. Louis Missouri

Family Gathered in Washington, D.C., August 12-16, 2010

Three JAZBAND families and The Girls were all in Washington, D.C. in August. They all knew that Grandma and Grandpa would show up and not miss it. Zack and Ana flew in from a summer internship in LA so they could drive their car (leant to CZ during her DC summer internship) back to Boston. The Earnests were bringing the kids to see Washington, D.C. from their new home in Chapel Hill, N.C. The four hour drive makes it much better than Korea.

Steve and Ie li had barely moved into their new home in Asburn before she was born. We enjoyed their hospitality.

For fun we went downtown to visit the Smithsonian, especially the Natural History Museum. We were all there - Grandma and Grandpa, the Z Zacks, the S Zacks, the Earnests, and The Girls. (We were missing the Wileys.)



We got the answer to the age-old question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?



We saw a Rare Encounter of two of the most famous diamonds - the Hope Diamond and the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond brought together to be exhibited in one place. Smile Christine. Thanks.


After learning lots about natural science and history, Jack enjoyed throwing a football with cousins on the grassy Smithsonian mall.


Some of us had lunch at We the Pizza. Next visit I hope we can take a tour of the Congressional Library.


The next day we went to the Air & Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport. It is a hanger full of famous planes. It was also fun to be in a model control tower and watch planes landing and taking-off at Dulles Airport.




Stephen added to the mood in his jet-pilot jacket.

July 2 - 36 years - Where were we?

Dinner at the Black Cow in Montrose was a fun trip down memory lane and a good way to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. Bumped into Bro & Sis Walters from La Crescenta Ward. They gave us an update on local ward news.
"Eclipse" was our romantic movie choice in Tustin. We drove south to the ocean and checked into Bay Shore Inn in Newport Beach.



My Hero

Memorial Day

One of the best things about living in Utah is being able to spend special days with family. John went with his Mom to visit dad's grave on Memorial day. It is a beautiful setting. The day is filled with love and many happy memories.

The Earnests are back in the USA!

On their way to their new home in North Carolina Annee and the kids are spending the month of June at our house in Provo. Darin was still working in S Korea but unexpectedly came to join them for few days them because of his grandfather's funeral.

Annee and the kids came to the BYU Dinosaur Museum with me.




It was wild!



At Scott & Claire Barton's wedding reception Huck got to meet his cute second cousin. She is Julie Barton Whittington's daughter. Don't you think they have similar smiles?



Because George was going to be in town, taking my Bear Den to Cub Scout Camp sounded fun. He got to paddle on the lake with the rest of my Den - David, Nathan and Josh.



A Good Time was had by all.

Family History trip to Bluff Utah

The Decker House Inn in Bluff, Utah is a very nice Bed & Breakfast today. My grandfather, Joseph Earl Wood was born in Bluff. His mother, Lillian Decker Wood, pioneered with the Hole-In-The-Rock Expedition when she was four years old. This is the home her parents built, Anna Maria and James Decker, Sr.


Brenden was studying Utah history in his 4th grade class. For Spring Break the Wileys came to see the area settled by the Mormon's San Juan Mission, including our Decker and Wood great-great-grandparents. John and I came here with my grandfather in July 1976. Now I'm the grandma coming back with my grandkids! Sarah was four months old back then.


This is the family of Anna Maria (44) and James Decker, Sr (47) around 1900. My great-grandmother, Lillian, is in the back row, second from the right. Next to her, Lena Deseret, was born on the trek. Here Lillian is 25 and the baby is 1.


The mother of the owners of the B & B helped in the breakfast room.


After they were established and had built the big house, James Decker, Sr and four children died within 5 weeks of each other, due to a diptheria outbreak.

Bluff is located near "Four Corners" where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada meet. When the locals want to go to a big city the closest is Grand Junction, Colorado.

December Snowmen

I know our hill doesn't look like much from afar, but really it is as tall as the picnic pavilion next to it. The kids came over to check it out and gave it relatively favorable marks. Now that Spring is almost here it is fun to remember these first days in December. Thanks for coming over Wileys.

Our Newlywed Cottage

Sometimes living in Provo takes me back to the day when John and I were students here at BYU. This little house was our first home after we were married in 1974. I thought it was 100 years old then, so how old is it now? They told us it was an old pioneer house made of railroad ties. It was heated by a gas-heating stove in the kitchen. I still think it is kind of cute.

We paid $75 a month rent, which was cheap even then. They are putting a new roof on it now, so maybe it will get a fresh coat of paint soon. Not long after we moved out, they rented it to the first Provo missionaries. As old as it is, I guess a lot of different people have called it home. I hope they remember it as fondly as I do.



I've always had a hard time remembering exactly where it was, but now that I'm getting to know Provo so well I will remember it is on 200 North, near 400 West. This is where we lived when we first became friends with Kerry and Marianne Hopkin.

January 2010 Memories

Here are some of my photo memories from January.


In our Riverwoods Ward I'm the Cub Scout Leader for the Bear Den. January's theme was "Power Up" and we went to visit the Provo Power Plant.


Rachel got us all set up for our first season at the Sundance Film Festival. John and I went up to the Sundance Ski Resort to see "Space Tourists." We also went to Park City to see a documentary about Lottery Winners with Christine. At the Tower Theater in SLC we saw a Polish movie about the Revolution and Solidarity. We never would have figured it out if Rachel hadn't taken the first steps and registered us.


We celebrated Grandma Z's 81st birthday with all her children and spouses. At times like this we are especially glad that we live in Utah and can be part of the family.
