Humanitarian Wednesday - Week 1

This week we aren't doing much on John's main registration project.
Instead we have been translating for Gary and Janet Flake, the humanitarian couple, who are trying to resurrect the contacts left behind by an earlier humanitarian volunteer (don't say "missionary.")

This has taken us in and out of a few Ministry Offices making cold calls, into one beautiful home, into three interesting meetings in our hotel, and many hours with a very nice, smart, English-speaking cabby. By the third day I think it's finally clear to me how their humanitarian neo-natal project works. In any case, it has been a group activity and we have enjoyed the company. All in an interesting place like Morocco.

We Are Here!

John and I traveled well and arrived at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Rabat, Morocco Saturday.
Sunday a branch member picked us up at the hotel at 9:30 am to drive us to church. It was wonderful to be there. We met in a home, the Ericksons'. There are 5-6 young American families attached to the US Embassy who gather here for Church and a few other Americans. The love and spirit is strong.

There is one 15 year-old girl in Young Women and one new deacon in the Aaronic priesthood. There are about 12 kids in the primary. where I'll be subbing. John practiced with the four-person choir. Church was followed by a pot-luck meal that was enjoyed by everyone. In its simplicity you feel how the Church supports Christ centered lives.

Sunday afternoon a humanitarian couple arrived, the Flakes. They came here after a week in Zambia where they were teaching classes on neo-natal resuscitation. They'll be at our hotel with us for a week to help us get started. Tomorrow afternoon Sharon Eubank, who is the director of the Church-wide Humanitarian Program will arrive and also stay with us a few days. We are well supported and will be off to a good start.

In the evening Dad and I took a walk along the river that the city of Rabat is built beside. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean right here. We joined the many promenading people.

We are patient about having to make the necessary adjustment to the 7 time zones change. It will come, but hasn't yet.

This is just a quick note to say we got here and are doing fine. We've had a wonderful Sunday and we're excited to started our work tomorrow, getting LDS Charities registered with the Moroccan government.

October 2010 in Chapel Hill

In October I visited the Earnest home in Chapel Hill, NC. I'm so happy they have moved back to the USA this year.
Here are some photo memories. Their home was a very welcome place to be.

A 40th High School Reunion in St. Louis Missouri

Family Gathered in Washington, D.C., August 12-16, 2010

Three JAZBAND families and The Girls were all in Washington, D.C. in August. They all knew that Grandma and Grandpa would show up and not miss it. Zack and Ana flew in from a summer internship in LA so they could drive their car (leant to CZ during her DC summer internship) back to Boston. The Earnests were bringing the kids to see Washington, D.C. from their new home in Chapel Hill, N.C. The four hour drive makes it much better than Korea.

Steve and Ie li had barely moved into their new home in Asburn before she was born. We enjoyed their hospitality.


Thanks for letting us land in your new home. You put us all at ease.



For fun we went downtown to visit the Smithsonian, especially the Natural History Museum. We were all there - Grandma and Grandpa, the Z Zacks, the S Zacks, the Earnests, and The Girls. (We were missing the Wileys.)



We got the answer to the age-old question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?



We saw a Rare Encounter of two of the most famous diamonds - the Hope Diamond and the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond brought together to be exhibited in one place. Smile Christine. Thanks.


After learning lots about natural science and history, Jack enjoyed throwing a football with cousins on the grassy Smithsonian mall.


Some of us had lunch at We the Pizza. Next visit I hope we can take a tour of the Congressional Library.


The next day we went to the Air & Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport. It is a hanger full of famous planes. It was also fun to be in a model control tower and watch planes landing and taking-off at Dulles Airport.




Stephen added to the mood in his jet-pilot jacket.
